What colors do sapphires come in?

Every color except red, which the trade calls ruby. Blue is the classic, and the same mineral grows pink, orange, yellow, green, purple, lilac, white and the pink-orange padparadscha. The trade calls anything other than blue a fancy sapphire, and this collection carries most of the family.

Are sapphires heat-treated?

Nearly all sapphires in fine jewelry are heat-treated, an accepted, permanent practice as old as the trade that brings out the stone's best color. For collectors who want the rarer thing, the vault holds loose heart-shaped sapphires, natural and unheated with known origin, reserved for custom commissions.

Is sapphire the September birthstone?

It is, in every color. Blue is the one most people picture, and a pink or yellow sapphire is the birthstone gift for someone who already owns the blue.

Can sapphire be worn every day?

Yes. At 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, second only to diamond, sapphire is one of the few colored stones that takes daily wear without fuss. Warm water, mild soap, and a soft cloth keep it bright. We still say skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners, and take rings off for the gym and the garden.

What is the difference between a sapphire and a ruby?

The color, and only the color. Both are corundum. A trace of chromium turns the crystal pink; more chromium and the trade calls it ruby. Where the line falls is a judgment, so a vivid pink sapphire and a light ruby can look like cousins. We buy the color we love and label it honestly.
